A winter breather
After weeks of bitter cold and intense blizzards, the USA will get a break this weekend with significantly warmer weather and no big storms expected.
Warmth approaches: A warming trend will spread across the Midwest and South and into most of the Northeast over the weekend and into early next week. Temperatures will be above average nearly coast to coast. Only the Pacific Northwest and Florida will be slightly below average.
Highs will top out in the 50s, 60s and 70s by Sunday from the Southwest to the Carolinas. Chicago will see above-freezing temperatures for the first time in about two weeks.

Light snow Great Lakes, Northeast: Weak storms will move across the Great Lakes, interior Northeast and northern New England Saturday and Sunday. Each system is forecast to spread a band of light snow, generally accumulating from 1 to 3 inches. Some spots closer to the Great Lakes could pick up 3 to 5 inches.
Soggy, Snowy Northwest: Rain showers are likely in the lower elevations and snow in the mountains in the Northwest and northern Rockies through the weekend. Some of the snow could be heavy in the highest elevations of the Cascades of Washington.

Now, the Cardinals are just five days away from Pujols' deadline to negotiate a contract extension before he reports to spring training, plays out the 2011 season and hits the free agent market. All indications are that negotiations are not going well. And Holliday says he's willing to do something about it. Holliday, in an interview with ESPN Radio, said he'd be willing to defer more money from his contract in order to accommodate a deal for Pujols. Deferring money after a deal is signed is a more common practice in the NFL, and it's the sort of thing baseball's union and agents frown upon, as Holliday acknowledges; he's represented by Scott Boras. But perhaps Holliday is envisioning a future in which Cardinals fans see him as part of the reason Pujols, their most iconic player since Stan Musial, skipped town.
