A winter breather

After weeks of bitter cold and intense blizzards, the USA will get a break this weekend with significantly warmer weather and no big storms expected.

Warmth approaches: A warming trend will spread across the Midwest and South and into most of the Northeast over the weekend and into early next week. Temperatures will be above average nearly coast to coast. Only the Pacific Northwest and Florida will be slightly below average.

Highs will top out in the 50s, 60s and 70s by Sunday from the Southwest to the Carolinas. Chicago will see above-freezing temperatures for the first time in about two weeks.

Light snow Great Lakes, Northeast: Weak storms will move across the Great Lakes, interior Northeast and northern New England Saturday and Sunday. Each system is forecast to spread a band of light snow, generally accumulating from 1 to 3 inches. Some spots closer to the Great Lakes could pick up 3 to 5 inches.

Soggy, Snowy Northwest: Rain showers are likely in the lower elevations and snow in the mountains in the Northwest and northern Rockies through the weekend. Some of the snow could be heavy in the highest elevations of the Cascades of Washington.

Thunderstorms on holiday: Calm conditions across the country will prevent thunderstorm formation anywhere in the USA either Saturday or Sunday.

Wildfire weather lacking: Light winds and recent heavy precipitation should limit the chance for wildfires developing across most of the USA. There is a very slight threat of wildfires in southern California because of a light offshore
